What spurred this?

I recently made some changes to my life insurance policy that required an in-house physical. I figured "no problem" I'll give some urine, give some blood, have my blood pressure taken and then be done. Well, I was right about all of that, but the results of that physical changed my mode of thinking in a pretty big way.

Technically, according to the BMI chart, my height and weight made me obese, my blood pressure was too high and I had high cholesterol and elevated triglycerides in my blood stream. I knew I had gotten a little soft and flabby, but I didn't realize just how bad off I was. I figured it was time to get up off of my ass and do something about it. Well, I can't really take full credit for this sudden change of heart because my wife has been suggesting it to me for a while now. I had actually started doing a little bit of exercise and making some diet changes on my own already, but doing anything just a little bit doesn't seem to count for much when you have as much to repair as I did. So I wanted to go all out, just get it all under control "right now"!

Why a detox?

I'd like to say that I had done some smart research and spoken to several medical experts or something of that nature, but the truth is that my wife said something like "What about that detox diet that Robin Quivers did? She lost 24 pounds in two weeks.". I was instantly intrigued so we rushed out and got a copy of the book, "21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha's Vineyard Detox Diet". The rest is pretty much history ... which I'll describe. =)

My wife read through it over the next few days and marked the instructional pages with tabs for me. I'd like to say that I read the whole book, but I'm a very slow reader compared to her, so this way I got to get started right away and I read through the book while I was actually doing the detox. Overall I did enjoy the book, but I would have liked a lot more detail than what was provided. That's probably just the mind of a developer speaking though.

What to do

Before I go on I'd just like to point out that this is not exactly what the book said to do. I like to simplify things so that's what I did. What I'm about to detail out is my own personal easy-to-follow interpretation of what Dr. Roni DeLuz tried to accomplish with her book combined with some of my own personal knowledge and that of some other medical experts and online references that I seeked further advice from after I decided that this was what I was going to do.

Before you begin

Go buy the book "21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha's Vineyard Detox Diet" so you can see first hand what I'm talking about and make some of your own personal tweaks to the system. My interpretation worked great for me, but everyone is different. The other things that you should do some more research on to get yourself better prepared for the steps to come are Colonics, Colon Hydrotherapists and Enemas. This is where most people check out, but if you do then you'll miss out on the program that works in record time just like they did. Don't fall for the peer pressure this time and if it's really peer pressure that's keeping you from doing this then just do it and lie to them ... they'll never need to know that you did anything more than a liquid diet.

Things to get you started:
  1. Schedule 3 weekly Colonics with a local Colon Hydrotherapist.
  2. Find a local grocery that sells highly nutritious smoothies; like Odwalla, Naked or Bolthouse Farms. I used Bolthouse Farms.
  3. Find a local grocery that sells a wide variety of teas, specifically detox and fasting blends, green tea blends and anything else that's herbal with little or no caffeine.
  4. Find a local grocery or farm market that sells a wide variety of fresh vegetables.
  5. In case you don't already have these; add a blender, a sharp knife and a crockpot to your kitchen collection.
  6. Get a small cooler to transport your drinks back and forth to work or wherever; don't create an excuse to cheat.
  7. Find some place where you can walk a mile at a time every single day; like the treadmill at the gym, around the block, on a park trail, etc.
  8. Cancel any strenous activities that may be scheduled for the next month, you won't have enough protein in your diet to sustain those kind of activities.

Now you're ready to get started. The rest is pretty easy, you just have to commit yourself to it and let everything run it's course.

What to eat

Well, the easy answer is "not much". From this point forward you can consider on a liquid diet. Your daily menu will always be the same and will look like this:

7:30 8:30 9:30 10:30 11:30 12:30 1:30 2:30 3:30 4:30 5:30 6:30 7:30 8:30 Bedtime
