The program that allows this is called CutePDF and it's free. It currently supports Microsoft Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003. If you're running MacOSX then you already have this capability, just "Print to PDF". Back in the day I used to use a hacked bash file as a printer driver for a samba printer share. It basically just piped the printer buffer to ps2pdf and saved that output to a file on a samba share. This was cool, but it was a hack and therefore riddled with compatibility issues; couldn't choose different layouts, collate, setting up proper colors was finicky, etc.

Anyhow, this is pretty cool. All you have to do is:

Now when you try to print from any application you can choose "CutePDF" as the printer and it will prompt you for where you want to save your PDF. Now your MacOSX buddies have one less thing over you. =)
